LBJ-003 (Wednesday)

What? I hope you weren't expecting a deviation from...

DAY THREE
Most relevant independent record labels carry a sense of family and friendship. Like seeing a TV show spinoff stumble onto it's own two feet with it's basis on a character you already know, some artists branch off with several distinct creative outlets. Saddle Creek has long been the home of funereal new-wave revivalists The Faint. I doubt I'll make it to The Faint this week, so please listen to highlights from their four albums on MySpace. Faint bassist Joel Petersen has issued three parts in his stick figure series under his solo moniker of Broken Spindles, Broken Spindles, Fulfilled/Complete, and Inside/Absent.
If I am to spend an entire Tuesday praising Rjyan Kidwell's Cex, I would be completely remiss to not bring up Broken Spindles. Joel's lyrics are just as abysmal as are The Faint's, but whereas you can dance until you sweat with The Faint playing, refusing to give in to their depressive instincts, Broken Spindles' stripped sound traps you in a small bare room staring your fear of the outside world in it's wide eyes. Oh, but you can still dance, too. Guitars are virtually deleted from the mix, as are live drums. This is a paranoid mix of occasionally horror-movie piano, blips, thumps and acidic bass. Any Broken Spindles album could easily sit next to the most recent Cex releases (Know Doubt and Actual Fucking), and I hope that's a turn-on for you. If you sometimes feel like your life is a movie, equal parts dark thriller and rave documentary, you may have just found your soundtrack.

Did you know?: Saddle Creek were greenlit last summer to create a concert venue/bar/pizza shop/indie theatre in Omaha? It will be called Slowdown after Cursive/The Good Life's Tim Kasher's early SC band Slowdown Virginia. Recent news is scarce but initial plans pointed at a June 2006 opening. Read a little more here.
