get away for the weekend.

At the tail end of 2004, Polyvinyl announced that they would release the debut album from Matt Pond PA tourmates Audible. They did so in January of '05 and it (alongside Ida's Heart Like a River) represented a warm, soft heart for the label. I'm still not sure what xbxrx represents, other than evidence that I don't worship everything Polyvinyl - damn near close, though. It's been over a year since Audible's Sky Signal made getting sleepy so much fun. The layering of keyboards, gentle guitars, often hushed vocals along with genuine lyrics and songwriting make Audible undeniable. I once heard a radio DJ introduce them as a Toledo local band. I believe Aqueduct was labelled an Icelandic guitar band by the very same jockey. I miss that show.
Audible's history is really quite interesting. Six years ago, there was an opening slot available at a Bright Eyes concert which Mike Kennedy (then-drummer for a few Philly-based bands) filled by doing some songs he had been writing alone. He requested the help of his girlfriend/roommate Mary in finishing the songs and playing them at the show. Audible (named after the football term) was born and became a trio soon after, before being put on hold as Mike and the new member joined Matt Pond PA for over a year. Now, Audible has their full attention, and has for three years. Though Mike and Mary split up, they remain the vocalists and keyboard players for the band. Mike also plays guitar along with loyal friend and third member Jim. More vocals, bass and drums are played by Kristine and Audible's final member, Steve.
I know. Names, names, names. Still interesting, I think.
The point is that Audible are releasing a new EP entitled Weekend. It contains six songs and is available currently through their website and MySpace. It's not (yet) on sale through PV's impeccable mailorder store. Details unknown.

Audible's "The Fireman"
from Weekends

Audible's "Sunday Bell"
& "We Were Wrong"
from Sky Signal

I mentioned another spotlight of sorts. I'll spend some time on that this weekend. But don't worry. HH is coming.
